Ira practices in the areas of debtors’ and creditors’ rights, bankruptcy and out-of-court reorganizations for businesses and individuals of high net worth. He also engages in litigation and commercial post-judgment collection, but only where necessary and beneficial to the client. He is a registered mediator with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.
Ira was the bankruptcy clerk to the Hon. Jeremiah E. Berk, United States Bankruptcy Judge (retired) after law school, and has practiced bankruptcy since then. He has worked for bankruptcy boutiques, including Angel & Frankel, P.C., Kensington & Ressler, Cohen Tauber Spivack & Wagner and Tarter Krinsky & Drogin, and has extensive experience in all phases of bankruptcy law. He has represented debtors, creditors, trustees, committees, landlords, plaintiffs and defendants in bankruptcy cases under chapters 7, 11 and 12 of the bankruptcy code as well as “Fortune 500” companies in Chapter 11 cases throughout the United States. He has been involved in cases in a number of industries, including airlines, jewelry, hotels, real estate, retail and wholesale businesses, restaurants, technology companies, hospitals and mail order companies.
Ira is the former chair of the Business Bankruptcy Committee of the New York County Lawyers’ Association and has been honored by the Association for his work as a lecturer in continuing legal education programs. He is currently the Secretary of the Federal Bar Association, Southern District of New York Chapter.
Ira was admitted in 1982. He has a law degree from New York Law School (J.D. 1981), an undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook (B.A. 1973) and a Masters degree in school psychology from Illinois State University (M.S. 1975).
